As a child I remember I would walk out in the newly bought pair from the store and get my old pair packed. You did that too, (or still do) right? Did I really care about the shoe box? Meh…It took starting and running a shoe business to learn some of life’s precious lessons!
1. Beauties need to be boxed- Always Always Always keep the shoes back in boxes. They are happy when they are home ☺
2. Shoe stuffings & holder sticks, the best friends- keep those to retain the shape of the upper.
3. Dust it off – at the end of the day wipe all the dry dirt off from your shoes. Just dusting it off avoids the dust to settle and find a permanent home.
4. Time for some TLC- when you are travelling, if boxes are too big, carry shoes in shoe bags- lay them in opposite direction to avoid the disappointment of seeing a bump or a break.
After a point, they might need a wash or a clean, check out our next blog post to get the low-down on that. Stay tuned!
The life of a shoe doesn’t start from the day it is purchased from the store. It starts with an idea that surfaced a long time ago. An idea that could take the stores by storm, an idea that could benefit both consumers and the animal kingdom, an idea that could make an impact.
Forecasting the trend of the upcoming season is the most crucial step. What style, colour, pattern, shape will it be? These decisions shape the future of the product and the brand. This is when the team finalises the look of the product and sends it for sampling. Sampling brings your imagination to life and just like real life it ain’t easy! It requires lots of running around, sourcing material, chasing vendors, feedbacks until we are satisfied with the prototype.
Then the next set of decision variables- forecasting the demand, size requirements and so on…Finally the bulk production starts! This takes time. During this period we work on the marketing strategies- social media promotion, collaborations, events, sales, cataloging etc. Once the finished products reach our warehouse, we are busy with sales and distribution. Challenges come through every single day but that is part of the package! For anything to grow, one will always face difficulties and that’s exactly what is making Kanabis stronger each day.
And within no time the cycle starts again, from an idea…
How many of us think of which shoes to wear first then choose rest of the outfit? I put my hand up and I’m confident that I’m not alone in this ‘But, First the Shoes’ world. And we do spend an inordinate amount of time looking for shoes, matching them with our outfits, or deciding a look based on the shoes that we want to wear.
Somehow the tides of fashion have always flown in the direction of high heels to accentuate the slender length of a woman’s leg. While heels are objects women lust after, the flats are really the best friends that come handy on a daily basis. Over the last few years, wearing flats became cool. Fashion is no longer about towering in sky highs, but about being comfy in flats. Enter Sneakers!
From white and black sneakers that have dominated runways for last few months to French vintage prints (think florals and pastels), sneakers are the new trend and here to stay. They offer ample support, don’t pinch or hurt you feet, can be worn for a night out just as easily as for a day at work.
So go ahead and treat your feet, pick up a pair of Kanabis sneakers and stay fashion forward!

Animal meat has been a part of the human diet long before we understood cultivation of plants and food grains. Animal husbandry was one of the prime professions before industrialisation. While raising animals for food and dairy is a need that most people can wrap their head around, animal lovers have a hard time understanding the need to skin animals for the sake of fashion. Leather, crocodile hide, furs, elephant hide, and snake-skin made in to shoes, gloves, purses, coats are endorsed by celebrities and coveted by the masses.
We at Kanabis believe that change can happen one shoe at a time. Shoes that are cruelty free.
There are many wonderful organisations that are making a difference to the way we treat animals- PETA with its SayNotoLeather campaigns and BSPCA that rescues injured or ill-treated animals. YODA – Youth Organisation in Defence of Animals is trying to induce compassion towards animals by taking canine experts and dogs to schools, interacting with kids and teaching them the joy of loving animals.
In addition to this they also have a shelter where rescued dogs and cats find treatments and homes. Pet lovers have the option of adopting four legged babies and giving them loving homes. About a year and a half ago, someone we know adopted an adorable Lhasa Apso, who was rescued from a family who had too many dogs and not enough resources to take care of all of them. The story started with a social media post from YODA about a litter of Lhasa pups that needed homes, and our friend who has wanted a pet for the last 20 years, picked up the phone and spoke with the lady who runs YODA.
The background of the pup and location was shared, along with the fact that the current owners were being pressured by YODA to give up the animals or face dire legal consequences, due to the condition the animals were in.YODA also enquired about her background, living space, prior pets etc. She went to see the pups and later described that there were 7 dogs, 2 adults (male and female) and 5 puppies, who were locked in a garage with little food, no lights or fan, some water and hardly any human interaction. Their condition was appalling to the least. The owner hemmed and hawed before he agreed to give her one pup.
Once the pup had been recused, YODA recommended a groomer to shave the pup down since he was infected with ticks and fleas, and a doctor for a check-up and de-worming. They called regularly for the next week to check up on the well-being of the dog, and then went to her house for a visit, to see how the little one was adjusting. They also made her sign an undertaking to neuter the dog at the right age. They also popped in a few times since for surprise visits to ensure that the dog is healthy and happy.
And this is just one of many stories about happy adoptions. If you’re here on the Kanabis website, apart from a shoe-lover, you might be an animal lover too! If you are ever looking for a pet, please adopt don’t buy. Wherever you maybe, there are shelters who take in abandoned animals who need homes. Ask around, go online, and find your four legged furry friend whose life you can help improve.
We all need to do our part.
We were recently invited by NIFT Delhi to interact with the design students and give our company presentation. We wanted to leave a fantastic impression of Kanabis (obviously!), but we also wanted to make it an enjoyable experience for the students. Not just another boring power point that they were being forced to sit through.
So we decided to run a shoe design contest. We used our Green T wedges as the subject and asked the students to redesign and transform it into their dream shoe! They would get to keep a pair to wear and flaunt their work around. The winner’s takeaway was a gift voucher and a 2 week internship at Kanabis.
With eyes on the prize, everybody unleashed their creativity and we saw some amazing hand-painting, use of embellishments, patches and much more. One of them added a piece of sheer vinyl with beautiful flowers embroidered on it and we found our winner- Diksha Trika. Her work showed an original thought and neat execution.
Congratulations Diksha! We look forward to having you on board for 2 weeks : )
There is a season for every shoe and a shoe for every season
Just find the right pair and you will become the reason,
For why trends are set and heads turn every where you go
Just put your right foot forward, with the right shoe and there you go!
The sun is out. Cool summer shades, pastel dresses, shorts and boyfriend jeans are being spotted in every nook and corner. Experimenting with shoes and going beyond sandals or flip flops for the summer can give you an edge. A bold, dazzling shade or white lacy brogues or maybe pink strappy wedges?
While a little rain is quite romantic, a heavy shower can literally halt lives. To not add onto the problems, the right footwear is simply necessary. Not only will it make a statement but will also leave you at the better side of the season. While rain boots are a good choice rains can also have you try hem shoes which work just as good and add to your style.
While some parts experience a numbing cold winter and snowfall others only feel a cool breeze. But none the less this season calls for a new look; something warm, something stylish. While half the world buys leather without realising the damage that comes with the package, we are proposing an alternative. Woven, woolen boots that will not only spice up your outfit but will also get a thumbs up from mother nature.
Spring requires a spring in your stride as well. What really stands out is a bright colour or a splash of a bold hue. The trend isn’t patterns that dominate the streets but the pockets of sunshine and colour that you bring. It is time you dominated the rich burgundy or the pristine whites of lilies and lilacs and colour the world in your own vivid hues.

I walk, I trip, I laugh, I rise, I walk.
I am comfortable in my own shoes.
I am not scared to fall, I am more excited to run and leap,
I am larger than life.
I am not what I was taught to be,
I am ‘me’ and I own it with grace and pride.
And this is exactly who I want to be.
My wings will grow again,
My flight will soar again,
I shall swim up again.
It isn’t about you and I,
It is about me finding the ‘I’.
I am not going to fit into shoes too tight or too loose,
For, I am comfortable in my own two shoes.

Once Upon a Night
Once upon a night, a clumsy old shoe, trying to review time got a cauldron to brew. But the naughty spell book pushed her inside, and when she woke up, 6000 BC was the time. “Who must you be, so different and unique? If only I could meet more shoes such as you”, said the primitive straw shoe, which had rescued her.
And so they embarked on a journey beyond lands and time to trace their evolution.
Far ahead in future was the next stop, in 1000 BC, where both of them did drop. Shoes here were different, taller and tangled. It wasn’t wilderness anymore but Greece when it was geographically angled.
“Where are we going next?” the magician’s companion asked. “To the land called the golden bird”, she replied. It was the Indian nation where they had reached and 200 BC was the era. “Oh wow! Look how everyone here resembles the bark of trees” they exclaimed. It was the wooden ‘Padukas’ that had left those two in a daze.
Now it was 50 years before Christ would come and ancient Rome was flourishing. It was the time when skin and hide were the ones trending.
“Where are we now?” the straw slipper asked. “We are in my time my child.,” said the other. It is the century where change has come and things are being set right. Our lord, the master shoemaker, realized how wrong it is, to kill innocent beings for our cause and so it is the era of KANABIS. Made from canvas, jute, lace and others we all are vegan shoes as you may say and now my child it is time for you to sleep and wake up in your time today.
The little straw shoe now in his own century had his wish come true, he travelled through time and met others of his kind, but as his favorite, and only Kanabis he would choose.

Mulan wasn’t a princess; she was a figure of inspiration and a woman who carved for herself her own destiny. The yellow brick road from the Wizard of Oz is a dangerous path followed only by the brave. Drawing from these two stories these ‘Yellow Brick‘ Beauties are for the women who are not scared to stand for themselves and hold up for their own. Be it an office where she is armed in her creaseless shirt and bold trousers or a party where she revives hearts by making them race with the flit of her plaid skirt.
She is perfect. It doesn’t matter what the outfit, what the look and what the day Snow White is always intoxicating with her natural beauty, simplicity and humility. This is why our real world Snow Whites rule the roost in any and every outfit complemented by these ‘Airy Fairies‘.Be it a floral summer dress, a pair of relaxed shorts or even boyfriend jeans with a loose hair bun. No matter what look you throw at this kind heated beauty she carries it with the least effort and care.
Beautiful, elegant, kind and tough, she is a woman with an aura so strong that she no longer requires a fairy God Mother. ‘Mule Magic‘ is a perfect fit for our reincarnated Cinderellas who instead of being damsels in distress would rather handle highs and lows of life and sail through them in style.
